Preschool Counting Songs (1-5 Forwards and Backwards)

Music is an integral part of the Early Learning classroom, and I have found it is a lot easier to teach children the concept of math and counting when they have a song to sing with it. So check out these Preschool Counting Songs (1-5 Forwards and Backwards) to up your counting game in the classroom!!

I know sometimes as teachers that we can sometimes jump into routine that we forget to think about why we are doing what we are doing.

I remember once as a student teacher walking into a classroom and asking a teacher why she did what she did.

She kind of looked at me funny and responded with, “you know, sometimes I forget why I am doing it because it just becomes habit.”

And I think as teachers we fall into this habit as well. However, it is important to remember that the reason we do the things we do always has educational value behind it.

Music and songs can be a lot like that. The song is fun and cute. But what is it really teaching??

Well did you know that songs can help teach one-to-one correspondence counting??

Not quite sure what that is??

Don’t worry I’ve got your back.

Early Math Erikson shares, “

“One-to-one correspondence {is} the idea that numbers correspond to specific quantities. For example, in playing a game, a child counts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 dots on the die and jumps 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 spaces on the board because 5 dots correspond in quantity to 5 jumps. The number “five” always corresponds to that precise quantity, no matter what it is you are counting.

A hallmark of accurate counting, then, is when preschoolers begin to assign one number, and only one number, to each object as they count. We see this achievement when a child touches or tags each object in time with saying the counting words. And, this is no small achievement as it requires coordinating motor movement and speech with exact synchrony.”

It seems like such a simple concept for us as adults but when we think about the work that our little students are accomplishing in one-to-one correspondence counting it is miraculous!!

As we allow concrete items to be represented in the classroom as we sing we allow children to have not only an interactive but also a hands-on teaching opportunity to learn one-to-one correspondence counting.

So, sing these songs in your classroom to help teach this foundational math concept!!

Some of the most popular songs that the children seem to love to sing in my classroom that relates to counting are:
1,2,3,4,5 Once I caught a fish alive
5 Little Monkeys Jumping on the bed
-5 Little Ducks
-5 Currant Buns
Here is the beehive
-5 Green Speckled Frogs

I have made printables along with props for each song that you can find in my TPT store!!
